For more than 25 years I have had the privilege to photograph many important people in the Political and Entertainment fields
- all in my favourite medium -
glorious black and white
In the Beginning
I first encountered photography at the age of seven with my father converting the kitchen on Saturday nights into a make-shift darkroom to develop and print the
family pictures taken on what he called his little magic box - a Kodak Baby Box Brownie.
My important job was to hang the small prints, after being washed onto a thin string line held between the kitchen cupboards with clothes pegs and wait until the prints
had dried before taking them down. Such excitement for one so young and I still have the magic camera that sits with pride upon a batch of his faded prints in my office.
How I Work
I keep it very simple. A Nikon F100 camera with automatic focusing - loading mainly Ilford HP5 plus 400 black and white film and using all available natural light - plus the love of composition -
wherever the location takes me - that's it.
All prints are hand developed by my Print Master - Bob Wiskin either in 12 x 16 or 20 x 16 formats using Ilford Multigrade fibre base 1K photographic paper, also known as Silver Gelatin.
